Statement on US Tariffs

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) says the latest round of US tariffs of 12.5 per cent on Australian goods is unjustified and ignores a free trade agreement (FTA) the two countries have had for over 20 years.

ACCI Chief Executive Officer Andrew McKellar described the decision to impose higher tariffs as “ludicrous and unjustified”.

“The US has again unilaterally cast aside its FTA obligations with Australia,” said Mr McKellar.

“Australia and the United States signed a Free Trade Agreement in 2005 for the purposes of enhancing trade, and these tariffs are in clear breach of that agreement.

“What makes it even more unjustified is the fact the US is imposing these tariffs on the basis of forced labour or modern slavery.

“Australia has some of the highest protections and enforcement against modern slavery anywhere in the world.

“The US Administration’s decision will reduce trade and increase costs for US businesses and consumers.

“ACCI as well as the business community are willing to work closely with the Australian government to try to resolve this issue.”
